The PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) states that PCI forensic investigation, “as it relates to information security, [is] the application of investigative tools and analysis techniques to gather evidence from computer resources to determine the cause of data compromises.” If you have experienced a data breach or cyber breach, and your business processes credit card data, you are required to employ a Cyber Forensics Investigator (PFI).
You need an independent PFI, who can act with integrity, objectivity, impartiality, and professional skepticism. VISA states, “The PFI cannot be an organization that is affiliated with the compromised entity or has provided services to the compromised entity such as previous PFI investigation, Qualified Security Assessor (QSA), advisor, consultant, monitoring or network security support, within the past 3 years.”
If credit card data has been stolen, you must engage a PFI. You cannot use your usual QSA, as they are not qualified in digital forensics. A data breach should always be investigated by an external and independent PFI. VISA: A Guide – What to do if you have been compromised.
As set out by the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC), “The PCI DSS applies to all entities that store, process, and/or transmit cardholder data. It covers technical and operational system components included in or connected to cardholder data. If you accept or process payment cards, PCI DSS applies to you.“
